Photography in Paradise

peeking from behind the sensor

Every once in a while I stumble on something fun to photograph. Today was no exception, when I went to the post office and passed the Rancho Santa Fe Antique Auto Show being held on the lawn of the Rancho Santa Fe Inn. I applied full breaks and backed up to get a parking space. This is not a big show with about 25 vehicles. The lawn of the Inn can’t handle much more so it is a small quaint show with no large crowd to deal with. This makes photography a lot easier. The afternoon sun was a concern since I prefer an overcast sky for softer lighting but you deal with what you have in outdoor events like this one. I needed to get to the post office before the closed so I only had an extra 30 minutes to photograph. I put the C\anon 24-105 lens on the Canon 6D without a tripod or any extra lighting or fill cards.
I really enjoy the vintage autos and the pure craftsmanship of the details in the metal work and painting. This is a visual feast of distinct crafted fenders, door handles with design, head lamps on top of fenders, very simple instrument panels, clocks that are as big as the speedometer and fine touches for comfort on the interiors. The designers and builders of these vintage cars were artists and the distinct tail lights, the logos for the model and manufactures, and radiator caps were grand sculptures.
The the sunlight and reflections from the surrounding trees, people and cars and my own reflection in the chrome and paint The Springtime pollen presented difficult choices to make simple and elegant images of the manufactured art.
The spring pollen had dusted autos. They had been cleaned in the morning but this was the late afternoon and most of them had not been cleaned. One gentleman saw me photographing vintage French made Delahaye and immediately whipped out a soft brush and cloth and began to wipe the pollen off for me. These images in this blog have not been touched up so you will the pollen. It will take several hours to clean up some of the images and I don’t want to do now.
I hope you have the chance to visit some antique auto shows in the future. I find it very rewarding as does most art. It is also a good exercise to hone your photographic abilities. I think you will feel the art as you look over the images here. Please let me know what you think of them.
