Photography in Paradise

peeking from behind the sensor

This turned out to be a great Father’s Day in the pool. My assistant, Jana, called me and said she had a friend about to give birth to their second child and wanted underwater photos of her and it had to happen quickly. It was Sunday and she was scheduled to deliver on Tuesday. At first, all I could think about was oops, water birth in the pool. Jana quickly prepared a costume and I assembled all the things we needed for the pool.

Dane and Jessica arrived at 1 pm with their 2-year-old daughter and by 2 pm we were in the water. With very little training Jessica managed to get her buoyancy under control with several add-on weights. A quick lesson in breath control and underwater movements helped her become very relaxed for the photo session. The water temperature was 83 F and the salt water pool is easy on the eyes. Her daughter doesn’t swim but wanted to get into the act. She was apprehensive at first to get her head underwater but was determined to do it. Dane, the husband was afraid of the water and we struggled to get his head underwater with his eyes open.

Jessica was a dream to work with and the images came out fine. She was already having some movement by the baby inside her so we cut the session short. They packed up and 2 days later they had another little girl.

I would love to work with Jessica and her daughters again.

It gave me a chance to test the new bubble bar and new black background. The only lens I used was the Sigma 20mm f1.4.
